Pretty exhausting trip from Bali including a 30-hr layover in Jakarta and a looooong bus ride from Istanbul, but I'm here! Settled for the next few months.
The only thing worse than airports in general is Jakarta Airport, and faced with the prospect of hanging around in the unwashed crowds and noise for 30hrs, I followed the signs to the airport hotel. In typical fashion, the signs led me to a hotel that is closed for renovation. Does nobody think in these places? I think it was Seth Godin who said that airports are such horrible places because nobody is really in charge. There is nobody tasked with making sure the customers are having a good time.
Fortunately, there was a tout for a new hotel hanging around by the 'closed' sign, and I ended up in a very pleasant (and cheap) place overnight and most of the next day. And Qatar Airlines are really great! The flights to Istanbul were really not bad at all, all things considered.
But next time, I don't care that it's cheaper to fly to/from Istanbul than it is from Sofia. It's worth the extra to just arrive at where you want to be without all the extra screwing around to take the bus. Arrived at 3:30am on Tuesday, after leaving Bali at 6 on Saturday. Never, ever, again.
Woke up this morning thinking of Annie!
